François Choye (born July 30, 1658 in Besançon ; † beginning of February 1706 ) was a wood sculptor from Savoy .

Life

Choye was trained by his father and was later brother-in-law of the sculptor Philippe Doby . He was at the head of a group of artists who created richly decorated altars and pulpits carved in wood and who were active in the Besançon area. Among other things, Choye received orders from the Confrérie de la Croix in Besançon. In 1696 he was employed in the church of Amagney , in 1699 in that of Avrigney , and in 1705 in Bresilley . Among other things, a monumental altar from 1702 in the church of Vuillafans , whose figures are almost life-size, has been preserved. Choye created the greater part of the figurative decoration; the smaller part comes from Jean Lignier . The village church of Saint-Hilaire received a tabernacle that Choye had originally created for the Cordeliers in Besançon. Choye died between February 1st and 4th, 1706.
