Avrigney-Virey is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Avrigney-Virey is located at an altitude of 270 m above sea level, five kilometers north of Marnay and about 21 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, on a plateau in the southwest of the Monts de Gy , north of the Ognon valley.

The area of the municipal area of 22.30 km² comprises a section of the gently undulating landscape between the valley plains of Ognon in the south and Saône in the north. The main part of the area is occupied by the Avrigney Plateau, which is on average 270 m and has a diameter of about four kilometers. It is made up of alternating layers of sandy, marly and calcareous layers from the Upper Jurassic and the Tertiary . The plateau is mainly used for agriculture, but there are also some forest areas. The entire area shows no surface watercourse because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. Towards the south a hollow descends to the valley of the Ognon, while a valley that gradually deepens into the plateau to the north belongs topographically to the catchment area of the Colombine .

The high plateau is flanked by the wooded heights of the Monts de Gy . In the west, the municipality extends to the back of the Bois de Cugney (335 m), in the southwest to the Bois du Mont (328 m). In the east, the municipal boundary runs over the heights of Mont Colombin (341 m), Bois d'Avrigney and Bois de Fays . At 355 m, the highest point in Avrigney-Virey is reached on Mont Marin .

The double community consists of the districts Avrigney (270 m) on the plateau and Virey (278 m) on the western edge of the plateau on the edge of the Bois de Cugney. Neighboring communities of Avrigney-Virey are Charcenne and Autoreille in the north, Courcuire , Beaumotte-lès-Pin and Brussey in the east, Marnay and Cult in the south and Tromarey and Cugney in the west.

history

Remains of a villa from the Gallo-Roman period near Avrigney and various finds indicate that the area was settled very early. Avrigney is mentioned for the first time in a document as early as 950. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The Archbishop of Besançon placed the parish of Avrigney under the monastery of Saint-Paul (Besançon) in 1131. The fief came into the possession of Simon de Joinville in 1263. Together with Franche-Comté , Avrigney and Virey finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

The municipality of Virey merged with Tromarey in 1807, but was given back its independence in 1824. 1972 Virey was merged with Avrigney to today's dual community. Since 2002 Avrigney-Virey has been a member of the communal association Communauté de communes de la Vallée de l'Ognon, which comprises 15 localities .
