François Heisbourg (born June 24, 1949 in London ) is a Luxembourg-French political advisor.

Life

François Heisbourg is a son of the Luxembourg diplomat Georges Heisbourg , who served in Great Britain from 1945 to 1951. Heisbourg studied at the École nationale d'administration (ENA). Heisbourg worked from 1978 for the French Foreign Ministry, 1979–1981 in the French representation at the UN , then as a consultant at the French Defense Ministry (1981–1984), in the private sector at Thomson (1984–1987) and in 1987 became director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London, where he left in 1992. He was director at the Institut universitaire de hautes études internationales de Genève, director at Airbus Defense and Space (1992–1997) and then again advisor to French ministries and director of the “Fondation pour la recherche stratégique” (2001 to 2005). Heisbourg continued to act as a consultant for European institutions and was a co-author of white papers on the security situation in France.

Heisbourg is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Institute for Strategic Studies and, since 1998, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Geneva think tank Center for Security Policy (GCSP) . He is teaching at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po).

In 2013, Heisbourg pleaded for an end to the common European currency .

He is an officer of the Legion of Honor , Chevalier des Ordre national du Mérite , received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany , is commander of the Order of the Oak Crown in Luxembourg and Knight of the Spanish Order of Military Merit .
