François Popineau

François Émile Popineau (born October 2, 1887 in Saint-Amand-Montrond , France , † March 29, 1951 in Paris , France) was a French sculptor .

Life

La maison de la culture, Bourges. The central bas-relief by Popineau on the upper part of the facade is about music and dance. The reliefs on the right and left are by the sculptor Louis Thébault.

Popineau spent his childhood and youth in the Boischaut region , where he turned to art at a young age. He studied art in Paris and worked there as a sculptor. Soon afterwards he took part in the First World War. After his return he resumed his work as a sculptor and also taught at the École des Beaux-Arts on Place Cujas in Bourges , and later also in Rouen .

François Popineau exhibited his work at the salons of the Société nationale des beaux-arts , Société du Salon d'Automne , Société des Artistes Indépendants and the Salon des Tuileries . In 1924 the Conseil Supérieur des Beaux Arts granted him a travel grant. At the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et industriels moderne , he won a gold medal in 1925. In 1927 he received the Prix ​​Puvis de Chavannes awarded by the Société nationale des beaux-arts for his statue La Baigneuse ( German Die Badende ).  

Popineau made war memorials and statues for public parks in the style of neoclassicism , especially for the city of Bourges. In 1945 he created a monument there in memory of the French resistance movement during the Second World War .

Popineau belonged to the artist group La Stèle , founded by the Éditeur d'art (art publisher) Arthur Goldscheider in the 1920s . His works in this group are attributed to Art Deco .
