François Rauber (born January 19, 1933 in Neufchâteau , France , † December 14, 2003 ) was a French pianist , composer , arranger and orchestra conductor . He became known in particular through his collaboration with Jacques Brel , for whom he composed and arranged numerous chansons .

Life

François Rauber studied as a classical pianist at the Conservatory in Nancy and took the master class there . In 1951 he came to Paris , where he worked as a pianist for the French National Assembly , for example at musical receptions. He also played in various Parisian cabarets, such as La Rose Rouge , L'Écluse , La Fontaine des Quatre-Saisons and Jacques Canetti's Les Trois Baudets , in which he accompanied Boris Vian in particular .

It was also Canetti who brought Rauber together with Jacques Brel on July 23, 1956, when he engaged the pianist to accompany Brel at a performance in the Grenoble bandstand. A collaboration began that was only ended with Brel's death in 1978. Various arrangers were still active on the chansonnier's third record in 1958, but Rauber already took over the entire B-side. From then on he was responsible for the arrangements of Brel's chansons , later in collaboration with Gérard Jouannest , and led the accompanying orchestra. It was Rauber who influenced Brel to no longer play his concerts with the guitar, which enabled the chansonnier to make his typical theatrical appearances. Rauber refined the chansons of the musical self-taught Brel with his knowledge of chamber music and fugue and kept Brel's tendency to exaggerate in check. According to Olivier Todd, Rauber's instrumentation was rather impressionistic , working with modulation and timbre . The two different personalities also became friends privately, and Rauber took over the sponsorship of Brel's third daughter.

The chansons that Rauber composed based on Brel's texts include Chanson sans paroles , Les paumés du petit matin , Je t'aime , as well as in collaboration with Brel and Jouannest Isabelle , Litanies pour un retour , La statue , J'aimais and L'ivrogne . For more chansons see the list of chansons and publications by Jacques Brel .

In addition to Brel, Rauber worked with Anne Sylvestre , Barbara , Juliette Gréco , Georges Moustaki , Isabelle Aubret , Pierre Selos , Charles Aznavour and Colette Renard . He wrote numerous film scores - here too, often with Brel such as Mein Unkel Benjamin and Die Filzlaus . He also composed circus music , music for children and some classical works. He dedicated his violin concerto Souvenance to the memory of Jacques Brel. In 2003 Rauber was awarded the SACEM Grand Prix .
