Franca Sozzani (born January 20, 1950 in Mantua ; died December 22, 2016 in Milan ) was an Italian journalist and long-time editor-in-chief of the Italian edition of the fashion illustrated Vogue .

Life

Franca Sozzani was the daughter of an engineer. She attended the Liceo classico Virgilio in Mantua and studied literature, philosophy and German at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore .

She started in 1976 as an intern at the fashion magazine Vogue Bambini and in 1980 became editor-in-chief of the women's magazine Lei . In 1982 she also took over the management of Per Lui , both magazines were later discontinued after her departure. She became the head of Vogue from 1988 until her death in 2016 . Since 1994 she was also the publishing director of the Condé Nast Italia publishing house of the Condé Nast Group.

Sozzani is considered to be the creator of the Supermodel brand , along with photographer Steven Meisel . Other photographers she worked with were Peter Lindbergh , Paolo Roversi, and Bruce Weber . Fabien Baron worked for her as art director in the late 1980s .

Sozzani has acted as the editor of several anthologies on lifestyle topics. Sozzani was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 2012 and has also served as honorary humanitarian ambassador for the United Nations .

Sozzani's son, the photographer Francesco Carrozzini (* 1982), has been making a documentary about his mother Franca: Chaos and Creation since 2011 , which premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2016 .
