Fabien Baron (* 1959 in Antony , France ) is a French art director based in the USA .

Life

Baron was born the son of a French newspaper designer. After school he attended the École des Arts Appliqués in 1975/1976 , but soon worked for the daily newspaper L'Équipe . In 1982 he went to New York City . He actually only wanted to stay there for a few months, but still lives there today.

First he got a job at the men's magazine GQ . In 1987 he designed the prototype for New York Woman magazine and became its art director for the first year of publication. In the late 1980s he was the art director of the Italian edition of Vogue and the interview magazine founded by Andy Warhol . In 1990 he founded his own agency " Baron & Baron " in New York . In 1992 he designed Madonna's SEX picture book. Also in 1992 he worked for Harper's Bazaar .

His clients included Armani , Dunhill , Miu Miu , Pringle and Calvin Klein , where he is also the creative director . Baron designs advertising campaigns, bottles and furniture. He has also launched his own collection of sunglasses.

Baron is considered the most influential art director of his generation. His trademark is minimalism spiced with provocation .

In 2008 he published the photo book Liquid Lights 1983-2003 with his own photographs from two decades.

Baron has three children from three relationships.

In Löderup , in the Skåne region  in southern Sweden, he owns a holiday home that was designed by the architect John Pawson .

Baron won several awards from the American Society of Magazine Editors and the Society of Publication Designers .
