Franziska Xaviera Cabrini (* July 15, 1850 as Francesca Cabrini in Sant'Angelo Lodigiano near Lodi ; † December 22, 1917 in Chicago ) is the founder of the order of the "Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart", canonized by the Catholic Church in 1946 .

Franziska Xaviera Cabrini was born as the youngest of thirteen children of the Italian farmers Agostino Cabrini and Stella Oldini. She is said to have taken care of needy children at an early age. In 1874 she became the head of a boarding school for children in Codogno near her place of birth. In 1880 the order of the "Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart", recognized by the papal as early as 1881, was founded by her. as a religious name, based on Francisco de Xavier, she also took the name Xaviera. At the instigation of Pope Leo XIII. She emigrated to the United States of America in March 1889 on board the French liner La Bourgogne to organize charitable and religious work among immigrants of Italian origin. In the course of her work in New York, she founded a total of 67 schools, hospitals, orphanages and monasteries in the USA and Latin America. The motherhouse of her order was finally built in Chicago. In 1909 Franziska Xaviera Cabrini received American citizenship. She died in 1917 of complications from malaria .

The Mother Cabrini High School in the New York borough of Manhattan was named after her.

Saints

She was beatified in 1938 and on July 7, 1946 by Pius XII. canonized. She thereby became the first American woman to be canonized. She is considered the patron saint of emigrants and immigrants. Her memorial day is the anniversary of her death, December 22nd; in the USA, mandatory memorial day is November 13th.
