Francesco Florimo (born October 12, 1800 in San Giorgio Morgeto , † December 18, 1888 in Naples ) was an Italian composer, musicologist and librarian.

biography

As a fellow student and devoted friend of Vincenzo Bellini , to whom he dedicated several writings ( Traslazione delle ceneri di Vincenzo Bellini: memorie e impressioni , Naples 1876, and above all Bellini: memorie e lettere , Florence 1882), he was a pupil of Nicola Antonio Zingarelli ( a funeral symphony specially composed for Bellini was performed at his funeral) and Giacomo Tritto .

In his youth he composed cantatas , masses, and in 1825 published an accepted singing method important enough to be used by the Naples Conservatory .

However, his memory is primarily linked to his work as a historian, librarian, researcher and cultural organizer. In 1826 he was appointed archivist, then director and finally director (from 1851) of the library of the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella (then Regio Collegio di Musica ), and under his direction the institution acquired a valuable collection of musicological works and manuscripts Neapolitan masters, but not only by Neapolitan artists.

His research on the musical tradition of Naples was summarized in 1869 in the historical work Cenno storico sulla Scuola musicale di Napoli (Historical reference to the music school of Naples) , which was published in 2 volumes, and later in the 4-volume work La scuola musicale di Napoli ei suoi conservatori (The Music School of Naples and its Conservatories) , published between 1880 and 1882.

His participation in the Neapolitan music scene is also connected with romances and song albums (partly transcriptions of folk songs) as well as with the controversy between Wagnerians and anti-Wagnerians, in which he sided with the German musician with the essay Richard Wagner ed i wagneristi, published in Naples in 1876.

Individual evidence

  1. Around 1845 he had also organized a history museum for the conservatory , which was not officially opened by Francesco Cilea until 1925 .
  2. One can imagine his satisfaction when Wagner visited St. San Pietro a Majella on April 20 and 21, 1880 .
