Francesco Giovanni Bonifacio

Francesco Giovanni Bonifacio (born October 4, 1912 in Piran , Slovenia , † September 11, 1946 in Grožnjan ) was a Catholic priest and martyr who was beatified by the Catholic Church .

Life

Francesco Giovanni Bonifacio was born in what was then Austria's Pirano d'Istria as the son of a poor family. He entered the Gorizia seminary in 1931 . In 1936, he was in the Cathedral of Trieste for ordained priests . Services as chaplain and vicar followed . As such, he was able to organize a considerable youth apostolate and found various branches of Catholic Action . He worked in Italian territory, which was occupied by Yugoslavia after World War II and terrorized by communist partisans. Francesco Giovanni Bonifacio was also in danger, but he was not intimidated. On September 11, 1946, he was arrested , tortured and finally stabbed by two contract killers from the Yugoslav secret service OZNA . He is one of the victims of the so-called Foibe massacre , as his body was thrown into a karst cave .

Francesco Giovanni Bonifacio was beatified in Trieste on October 4th, 2008 . His feast day in the liturgy is September 11th .
