Francesco Libetta (born October 16, 1968 in Galatone ) is an Italian pianist .

Life

Francesco Libetta studied piano with Vittoria De Donno and composition with Gino Marinuzzi in Rome and Castérède Jacques in Paris, where he also attended some courses at IRCAM .

At the age of 21 he was already playing the entire cycle of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas .

In 1993, György Ligeti's thirteenth piano etude , L'Escalier du Diable, was premiered in Italy . Another premiere took place at the International Festival in Alicante place where Libetta the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No.1 of Franco Oppo played. He later performed at La Scala in Milan and other renowned concert halls, for example in Japan and the United States.

As part of the international piano festival in La Roque-d'Anthéron ( Bouches-du-Rhône ) in 2002, he played works by Hummel, Franz Liszt , Saint-Saëns , Alkan , Debussy and Godowsky. This concert was recorded directly and later released on DVD.

In addition to the piano sonatas and many variations of Beethoven, his current repertoire includes all of Franz Liszt's Wagner transcriptions, works by Chopin , Brahms , Mussorgsky , Balakirew , Debussy , Ravel and a number of Ligeti's etudes .

Alongside Marc-André Hamelin , Libetta is one of the few pianists who have completely recorded Leopold Godowsky's 53 studies on Chopin etudes, which are among the most virtuoso works in piano literature. He was the first pianist to perform the cycle in concert in 1990.

His game stands out u. a. characterized by a clear, sometimes dry attack, economical use of the pedals and frequent non-legato .

The Italian pianist Aldo Ciccolini spoke of Libetta as one of the most talented instrumentalists of his generation. Eric Schoones called him the "reincarnation" of Dinu Lipatti .

Bruno Monsaingeon , the director of the documentation of the La Roque-d'Anthéron concert, considers Libetta to be one of the greatest virtuosos of our time.
