Francesco Martelli
Francesco Martelli (born January 19, 1633 in Florence , † September 28, 1717 in Rome ) was an Italian Catholic cardinal and patriarch .
biography
He was born as a member of the Florentine patrician family Martelli and graduated from the University of Pisa in both civil and canon law. At the beginning of his ecclesiastical career, he was a canon of the cathedral of Florence . On 25 August 1675 he was subdeacon, on September 1, 1675 deacon and on September 8, 1675 priests. He was the spokesman for Clement IX. , Speaker of the Apostolic Signature , Governor of Faenza and Spoleto .
On September 9, 1675 he was appointed titular archbishop of Corinth , from September 20 of the same year as assistant to the papal throne and at the same time appointed apostolic nuncio in Poland .
Under Innocent XI. he was secretary of the Congregazione dell'Immunità ecclesiastica and from July 27, 1691 of the Sacra Consulta . On July 21, 1698 he was promoted to Titular Patriarch of Jerusalem . On May 17, 1706 he was appointed cardinal priest in the consistory with the titular church of Sant'Eusebio . A few years later he retired because of gout.
He died in his Roman palace near Sant'Agostino and was buried there before being transferred by his family to the family chapel in Florence, in the church of Santi Michele e Gaetano .
