Francesco Romano (born April 25, 1960 in Saviano (NA) , Italy ) is a former Italian football player . He took part in the 1988 European Football Championship with the national team of his home country .

Career

In the club

Francesco Romano began his football career far away from home in the city of Reggio nell'Emilia . There he played from 1974 for the youth team of AC Reggiana . After three years in the club's youth, he was appointed to the professional team at the age of 17. The pros played in Serie C back then . Romano spent two years in the team and narrowly missed promotion twice. At the young age of 19, AC Milan signed him in 1979 . At last year's champions Romano was mostly on the starting line-up and was also used in the European Cup . There it stayed with only one mission due to Milan's elimination in the first round against FC Porto . At the end of the season, Milan finished third in the Serie A finals . But due to illegal betting shops and the involvement of the association in the betting scandal had Milan in the Serie B dismount. Despite relegation, Romano remained loyal to the club and played 37 of 38 possible games in Serie B. At the end of the season, Milan managed to be promoted to Serie A as first in the table. But the club was unable to recover from the consequences of the betting scandal and was relegated straight away. Romano did not leave the club this time and managed to get promoted again. But since Romano's performance apparently no longer lived up to expectations, he left the club and went to US Triestina in Serie B.

He stayed in Triestina for three years, during which the team always ended up in the middle of the table. During the 1986 winter break, Naples coach Ottavio Bianchi was looking for a midfield director and therefore hired Romano to take on this role. Romano did this with success and made a significant contribution to the double's win . He continued to be successful with SSC Napoli over the next few years and even won the UEFA Cup with the team in his last year . Then Romano moved to FC Turin in Serie B. There he was promoted to Serie A in his first season, in which he played a large part with a total of 31 appearances. For the new season in Serie A, Turin signed many well-known players such as B. Rafael Martín Vázquez from Real Madrid . Among the new signings were two former teammates Romanos from SSC Napoli ( Raffaele Di Fusco and Luca Fusi ). The newly formed team around Romano was fifth in Serie A and even won the Mitropa Cup. Due to the good placement in the table, the club had even qualified for the UEFA Cup, but Romano left the club after the season and moved to SSC Venice . The club played in Serie B at the time and only reached the bottom of the table in Romano's time, but did not descend. After two years in Venice , Romano returned to his home club, US Triestina. There he completed a season and was tenth with the team in Serie C. Nevertheless, Romano left the club, as this had to be relegated due to financial problems. His new club was the league competitor AC Palazzolo , who was able to keep the class through the forced relegation of Triestina. But in the new season with Romano it was not enough for relegation and since no club had to be relegated this time, Palazzolo could not hold the class. Romano therefore decided to end his career.

In the national team

Romano's first appearances for Italy were in the U-21 national team , for which he appeared twice and with which he also took part in the U-21 European Championship in 1982 . During his time in Naples, he was from Azeglio Vicini even into the squad for the 1988 European Championship in Germany called. Nevertheless, he never made it to the senior national team .
