Francis Newman (colonist)

Francis Newman (*? In England ; † 1660 ) was an English colonist in America and from 1658 to 1659 governor of the New Haven Colony .

Life

Francis Newman was born in England and immigrated to New Hampshire in 1634 . Shortly after his arrival, he moved to the Connecticut Valley, where he was best known for handling the business affairs of the New Haven Colony. In 1640 he was admitted as a Freeman , in 1642 joined the vigilante's rank as Ensign , in 1645 was Lieutenant of the Artillery Company when it was formed, and in 1647 Secretary of the Plantation .

In 1653 he was one of the commissioners sent from the Connecticut River cities to Manhattan to seek reparations from Petrus Stuyvesant , Governor of Nieuw Nederland , for the continued nuisance of the Dutch on the English colonists . In July 1654 he was appointed one of the commissioners of the United Colonies of New England . In May 1658 he succeeded Theophilus Eaton as governor of the New Haven Colony.

Francis Newman was married to Mary Newman, who was subsequently married to the Reverend Nicholas Street and Governor William Leete after his death . She died on December 13, 1683.
