Francis Sejersted (born February 8, 1936 in Aker ; † August 25, 2015 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian historian and from 1973 to 1998 professor of social and economic history at the University of Oslo .

Life

Sejersted was a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee from 1982 to 1999 , since 1990 as chairman, and was thus responsible for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize . From 1990 to 1999 he was also a board member of the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm.

From 1971 to 1975 he was editor of Historisk Tidsskrift and since 1984 co-editor of Nytt Norsk Tidsskrift .

Sejersted was a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences (since 1976), the Norwegian Academy of Language and Literature (since 1985), the Academia Europaea (since 1989), the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences (since 1993), the Norwegian Technical Academy of Science (since 1995), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (since 1997) and the Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskab (since 2001).

He belonged to the Conservative Party ( Høyre ) and was considered an important value-conservative thinker in Norway. Since 2000 he has been chairman of the Fritt Ord Foundation . From 1996 to 1999 he was chairman of the Norwegian Parliamentary Commission on Freedom of Expression.

Sejersted was Commander of the Order of Saint Olav and holder of the Order of Dannebrog and the Order of the North Star .
