history

Glanzstoff high-rise on Kasinostraße, corner of Herzogstraße in the Elberfeld district of Wuppertal

As the predecessor of Enka GmbH , the Vereinigte Glanzstoff-Fabriken AG was founded in 1899 . The production of cellulosic continuous yarn was then expanded and further developed under the name Enka AG, later a subsidiary of AkzoNobel .

In 1984 the Spinnfaser AG plant was closed. In 1999, when Acordis was founded, the company separated from the parent company Akzo Nobel. 19,000 employees at 25 locations in eight countries around the globe produced man-made fibers and special products for technical, textile, medical and hygienic applications. With its four production sites in Germany and Poland, Enka remained an independent part of the Acordis Group.

In the years after the war, the plant in Heinsberg-Oberbruch had developed into a leading production location for man-made fibers. This increased the demands on high-end spinnerets, so that the spinneret workshop became a separate department. This was the origin of the Enka Tecnica company founded in 1998. In the meantime, Enka Tecnica is still an independent company and a member of the Reifenhäuser Group .

In 2005, the International Chemical Investors Group in Frankfurt am Main , which was founded in 2004, completely took over Enka GmbH & Co. KG with more than 1000 employees.

The International Chemical Investors Group is now closing down the Oberbruch site , which is the historical root of viscose spinning in Germany. Although the employees there had an employment guarantee until 2012, it was announced to them in May 2006 that the location would be closed by the end of 2007 due to the relocation to Jilin (China) and that their jobs would be lost without replacement. This finally ended the era of Glanzstoff at the original location. In 2009 the production site in Elsterberg was also closed.

The plant in Obernburg am Main and the head office as "ENKA International GmbH & Co. KG" in Wuppertal continue to exist.
