Francis Tumblety (* probably in 1830 ; † 28. May 1903 in St. Louis ) was probably from Ireland or Canada originating doctor and quack . He was one of the prime suspects in the unexplained Jack the Ripper case.

Life

Family and origin

Tumblety was born to James Tumblety and Margaret Tumblety around 1830 and was the youngest of eleven children. His birthplace is largely unknown, but is believed to be Ireland or Canada. However, Tumblety referred to himself as an American in an interview with the New York World around 1889, which suggests that he was born on the North American continent.

More suspicious than Jack the Ripper

While in London , Tumblety was charged with obscene acts and imprisoned in November 1888. After paying heavy bail for his release, he fled England to the United States that same month and went into hiding. There he was apparently wanted by the English police for the Ripper murders. Tumblety was initially just one of many suspects at the time of the murders, but was favored as a possible perpetrator by Chief Inspector John George Littlechild . Littlechild mentioned his suspicions in this regard in a letter dated September 23, 1913 to the crime journalist and writer George Robert Sims .

Activity in the USA

Francis Tumblety ran a medical practice in Brooklyn , New York , where he employed a number of employees. a. David Herold (1842–1865), one of the assassins on US President Abraham Lincoln . Tumblety was temporarily arrested while hunting down the Lincoln killers, but was released.

Death and funeral

He died on May 28, 1903 in St. Louis ( Missouri ) and was on the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Rochester ( New York buried).
