Francis X. Flaherty

Francis X. Flaherty (born January 8, 1947 in Providence , Rhode Island ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and lawyer .

Life

Flaherty was born in Providence in 1947 to Eugene A. Flaherty and his wife Gertrude (nee Strong) and grew up with three brothers, including the future politician Robert E. Flaherty , and a sister. He studied at Providence College , where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1968 . He then served in the United States Army . After retiring from active service, he resumed his studies and went to Suffolk University in Boston , Massachusetts , at whose law school he received a Juris Doctor cum laude in 1975 .

Flaherty now practiced as a lawyer in Warwick, Rhode Island . He was also Assistant City Solicitor from 1975 to 1978 . In 1978 he was elected to the city council, the Warwick City Council , and was a member of this from 1979 to 1985. In 1984 he was elected mayor of Warwick. He was re-elected in 1986 and 1988, so that Flaherty held this office from 1985 to 1990. As mayor, he was President of the Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns in 1989 and 1990 .

In 1990 he refrained from running again for a fourth term as mayor, instead he took part alongside Joseph R. Paolino junior and Bruce Sundlun in the primary elections of his party to determine the democratic candidate in the upcoming gourverneurs election. Flaherty achieved second place here. In 1992 he tried again to be nominated by his party as a candidate. Like two years earlier, he had to admit defeat to Sundlun in the primaries.

After retiring from politics, Flaherty began practicing law again in Providence and Warwick. In 2003 he was appointed a judge at the Rhode Island Supreme Court by Governor Donald Carcieri . His inauguration took place in May of the same year.

Flaherty is a member of the Rhode Island Bar Association and the American Bar Association . He is a member of the Board of Trustees at the New England Institute of Technology .
