Francisco Adolfo Coelho (born January 15, 1847 in Coimbra , † February 9, 1919 in Carcavelos ) was a Portuguese reform pedagogue, folklorist, Romanist , Lusitanist and Creoleist .

life and work

Coelho studied in Coimbra, but was dissatisfied with the university and trained himself (mainly based on German publications) to become the first modern Portuguese scholar of Romance philology. He taught from 1878 at the Escola Normal Superior de Lisboa and at the University of Lisbon .

Coelho belonged to a group of young Portuguese intellectuals who were enthusiastic about the revolutionary currents of that time and who wanted to fertilize the science and culture of Portugal with them: In the Conférences du Casino (named after the Lisbon Casino, where they took place), in the spring of 1871 discussed the ideas of Proudhon , Marx, Darwin and Taine . A total of five of these conferences took place, the last one on June 19, directed by Coelhos, after which they were banned by the reactionary forces in power. The activities of this group were constitutive for the revolutionary movement Geração de 70 (Generation of Coimbra). In 1874 he received from Karl Marx Das Kapital in the 1872 edition with the dedication “hommage de l'auteur” and a photograph by Friedrich Wunder .

With his philological, lusitanistic, ethnological and educational writings he was a respected intellectual in Portugal.

Coelho was an honorary doctor of the University of Göttingen (1888).
