Francisco José Domingo y Marqués (born February 12, 1842 in Valencia , † January 1, 1920 in Madrid ) was a Spanish painter and graphic artist of Realism and Impressionism .

Life

The artist's family originally came from the mountain village of Albentosa in the Gúdar-Javalambre district before settling in Valencia. Francisco Domingo began his painting training at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos (San Carlos School of Art) in Valencia. His teacher there, Rafael Montesinos, admired the baroque painter Jusepe de Ribera , whose works were copied by the young Francisco Domingo. He continued his education in Madrid at the San Fernando Academy from 1864. In 1867 he received a gold medal for his painting Pallater at the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes de Valencia . His paintings from this period are under the influence of Eduardo Rosales (1836–1873), Diego Velázquez and Francisco de Goya . In the same year he was also awarded the Premio de Roma. This price was linked to a scholarship that enabled him to stay in Rome. On the trip to Italy in 1868 he also visited Paris for the first time. He sent the painting Santa Clara , created in Rome, to the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1871, where it was awarded a first class medal. After returning from Italy, the painter settled in Madrid and Valencia. From 1871 he taught as a professor at the Academy of San Carlos there. In Madrid he was commissioned to decorate the Palacio de Fernán-Nuñez and the Palacio de Portugalete. Following the example of Marià Fortuny , Francisco Domingo went to Paris in 1875, where he stayed until 1914. Here he got to know the painting style and color palette of the Impressionist painters , which he adopted in his work in the following years. In addition to the history painting and religious themes of his early work, genre scenes, landscape pictures and portraits were created, including a portrait of King Alfonso XIII. belonged to. In old age he received numerous honors, including membership of the San Fernando Royal Academy in 1917. His son Roberto later also worked as a painter.
