Francisco Claver

Francisco F. Claver SJ (born January 20, 1929 in Bontoc , Philippines , † July 1, 2010 in Manila ) was a Roman Catholic bishop in the Philippines. He was considered an outstanding figure in the Catholic Church in Asia.

Life

Francisco Claver joined the Congregation of the Jesuits in Quezon City at, studied at the Seminary in Baguio City , philosophy at St. Berchmans College in India and theology at Woodstock College and was in anthropology at the University of Colorado at Boulder , USA, PhD. He was ordained a priest on June 18, 1961 in Woodstock, Maryland, USA.

In 1969 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. Appointed titular bishop of Nationa and first prelate of the Malaybalay Prelature . The episcopal ordination donated him on August 22, 1969 in Baguio City Archbishop Carmine Rocco , Nuncio to the Philippines; Co -consecrators were Teofilo Camomot Bastida , Coadjutor Archbishop in Cagayan de Oro, and William Brasseur CICM, Vicar Apostolic in Mountain Provinces (Montagnosa). With the elevation of the prelature to the diocese of Malaybalay in 1982 he was appointed first bishop by Pope John Paul II ; In 1984 he resigned from office. In 1995 he was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Bontoc-Lagawe. In 2004, his application for age-related retirement was granted.

From 1973 to 1979 Claver was a member of the Pontifical Council for Dialogue with Non- Believers in Rome and from 1974 to 1978 chairman of the Episcopal Commission for Non-believers in Manila. In 1983 he became chairman of the Episcopal Commission for Indigenous Filipinos. From 1995 to 1999 he was chairman of the Commission for Social Affairs, Justice and Peace of the Bishops' Conference CBCP.

In 1984 he became an associate member of the Institute for Church and Social Affairs. He was a permanent visiting professor at the East Asian Pastoral Institute in Quezon City, an institute of the Ateneo de Manila University . He was also secretary of the Jesuit apostolate in East Asia and Oceania.

Francisco Claver was considered to be one of the most important figures in the Catholic Church in Asia. He was involved in the resistance against Ferdinand Marcos , dictator and president of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986.
