Sotero Francisco Montes Varela (born April 22, 1943 in Zacatecas ) is a retired Mexican football player who acted as a central defender .

biography

As far as is understandable, Pancho Montes' professional career began in 1964 with CD Veracruz , who celebrated his return to the Primera División that year after twelve years of abstinence . While two third places in the seasons 1967/68 and 1969/70 his greatest success with the Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz were, he reached for his move to Atlético Español in the seasons 1972/73 and 1973/74 twice the 1970/71 newly introduced Play-offs . AE failed in the semi-finals against León in 1973 only on penalties and reached the finals in 1974 against the then serial champion Cruz Azul , who was able to prevail this time and managed the title hat trick . After these two seasons Pulido returned to Veracruz , where he let his professional career end in the 1974/75 season.

National team

In 1970 and 1971 he was used a total of 18 times for the Mexican national soccer team, 16 of them over the full distance of 90 minutes. Although he played all nine international matches in which he took part in 1970 and was appointed to the 1970 World Cup squad , he was not used at the World Cup itself.

Pancho Montes made his international debut on February 18, 1970 against Bulgaria (2-0) and retired on October 13, 1971 with a 4-0 win over Bermuda.

After the end of his active career, he and his wife opened a photo studio in Monterrey .
