Franciscus Sonnius

Franciscus Sonnius (born August 12, 1506 in Son near Eindhoven ; † June 29, 1576 in Antwerp ; actually Frans van de Velde ) was the first Roman Catholic bishop of Antwerp .

Franciscus Sonnius studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Leuven . He received his doctorate in theology in 1539 and from 1544 was professor of controversial theology at the University of Leuven. From 1549 to 1560 he was an inquisitor and from 1551 he took part in the Council of Trent as a representative of the University of Leuven and an imperial theologian . In 1557 he took part in the religious talk of Worms, in 1558/59 he stayed in Rome on behalf of Philip II for the purpose of negotiating new dioceses to be established .

On March 10, 1561, Franciscus Sonnius was appointed the first bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch . The Archbishop of Mechelen , Antoine Cardinal Perrenot de Granvelle , donated him episcopal consecration in 1568.

On March 13, 1570 he was appointed the first bishop of the Antwerp diocese .
