Franciszek Lisowski, Bishop of Tarnów (1933–1939)

Franciszek Lisowski (born October 1, 1876 in Cieszanów , Galicia , † June 3, 1939 in Tarnów , Poland ) was Bishop of Tarnów .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1895, he began to study theology at the University of Lviv and then continued at the Gregoriana in Rome . He was ordained a priest on August 19, 1900 in Rome . On May 15, 1902, he also received his doctorate in philosophy and theology in Rome . After his return from Rome he taught at Lviv grammar schools. In 1911/1912 he found out about the local school system on a trip to Germany. He then taught dogmatics at the theological faculty of the University of Lemberg, where he also held the office of dean . From 1913 to 1933 he was also prefect and later rector of the seminary in Lemberg.

On July 20, 1928, Pope Pius XI appointed him . as auxiliary bishop in Lemberg and titular bishop of Mariamme . He received the episcopal ordination on October 7, 1928 by the Archbishop of Lemberg Bolesław Twardowski . He became a member of the cathedral chapter and vicar general of the archbishop. On January 27, 1933, he was appointed Bishop of Tarnów. As a bishop he was very committed to educational and charitable tasks, he called a diocesan synod in 1938 and established several new congregations.

Bishop Lisowski died during the ordination of young seminarians and, at his request, was buried in the new cemetery “among the poorest of the city of Tarnów”.
