Jan Stepa

Jan Stepa (born June 24, 1892 in Sasów , Galicia , † May 28, 1959 in Tarnów , Poland ) was Bishop of Tarnów .

Life

The son of a sculptor studied after graduating from high school in 1911 theology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and was on 29 July 1915 by Józef Bilczewski , the Archbishop of Lviv , for priests ordained. After a few years in parish pastoral work and in school service, he began studying philosophy in Belgium in 1922 and received his doctorate in 1925. During his studies, he was involved in pastoral care among Polish emigrants in Belgium and France. He taught at the University of Lviv and became associate professor on September 1, 1932. He was rector of the seminary in Lviv and vicar general of Archbishop Eugeniusz Baziak .

On March 4, 1946 he was by Pope Pius XII. appointed Bishop of Tarnów. He received the episcopal ordination through Cardinal Adam Stefan Sapieha , the Archbishop of Cracow ; Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Lemberg, Eugeniusz Baziak and the auxiliary bishop in Kraków, Stanisław Rospond . In the post-war years, during the Stalinist era , he had many problems with maintaining the religious life of believers.

He died on May 28, 1959 while taking part in the Corpus Christi procession and was buried in the old cemetery in Tarnów. In 1964 the remains were transferred to the crypt of the Church of Our Lady of Fatima in Tarnów.
