Frank Bencriscutto

Frank Peter Anthony Bencriscutto (born September 21, 1928 in Racine , Wisconsin , † August 28, 1997 in Roseville , Minnesota ) was an American composer .

Life

He was the ninth of ten children of Italian immigrants. He started playing the saxophone at the age of ten and received regular music lessons. He played very quickly in jazz ensembles and later financed his studies at the University of Wisconsin in Madison , where he completed his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music , Northwestern University in Evanston / Chicago , Illinois and the Eastman School of Music from the University of Rochester in Rochester , New York with Howard Hanson and Bernard Rogers . He played solo alto saxophone in the famous Eastman Wind Ensemble under Frederick Fennell . In 1960 he completed his studies there with a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music .

In the same year he was appointed wind orchestra conductor and professor at the University of Minnesota , Minneapolis , and remained so for 32 years. He conducted in many countries around the world. In 1969 he toured the Soviet Union for seven weeks and performed 27 concerts in ten cities with the University of Minnesota Wind Orchestra . The tour was so successful that he was invited to the International Tchaikovsky Competition for the following year (1970) with Dmitri Dmitrijewitsch Shostakovich and the Ministry of Culture as the official guest of honor of the Soviet Union. In 1980 he completed a concert tour in the People's Republic of China with the University of Minnesota Wind Ensemble .

For six semesters between 1991 and 1996 he was visiting professor and conductor of the brass orchestra of the renowned Musashino Academia Musicae in Tokyo , Japan .
