Frank Freidel

Frank Burt Freidel Jr. (born May 22, 1916 in Brooklyn , † January 25, 1993 in Cambridge (Massachusetts) ) was an American historian and biographer of Franklin Delano Roosevelt .

Freidel was descended from Quakers and grew up in Plattsburgh and southern California during the Great Depression, which also hit his family hard. He studied at the University of Southern California with a bachelor's degree in 1937 and a master's degree in 1937, and received his doctorate in 1942 under William B. Hesseltine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a dissertation on the lawyer Francis Lieber . He then went to Shurtleff College, the University of Maryland , Pennsylvania State University , Vassar College , the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and from 1953 at Stanford University . From 1955 until his retirement in 1981 he was a professor at Harvard University , from 1972 as Charles Warren professor of history. 1981 to 1986 he was Bullitt Professor at the University of Washington . Most recently he lived in Belmont (Massachusetts) . He died of pneumonia and had cancer.

Freidel is known for his large five-volume biography of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the president responsible for the New Deal . The sixth volume remained unfinished, but he published an abridged version of his Roosevelt biography in 1990. Most recently, he worked on a brief biography of Roosevelt for McGraw Hill aimed at college students.

In 1964 he was a Guggenheim Fellow. In 1965 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1975/76 he was president of the Organization of American Historians and 1966/67 of the New England Historical Association. From 1973 to 1976 he was on the Department of the Army Historical Advisory Committee.
