Frank L. Shepherd

Frank Ludwig Schäfer (* 1974 in Karlsruhe ) is a German law scholar and professor at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .

There he holds the chair for German legal history and civil law. His research interests are in law of obligations , private insurance law and legal history .

Schäfer studied law in Heidelberg , where he passed the first state examination in 1998. In 1999 he received a Master of Laws from Cambridge . The second state examination followed in 2002 in Stuttgart and then he received his doctorate with Adolf Laufs in Heidelberg . In the 2006/07 winter semester, he completed his habilitation with Joachim Rückert at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . In October 2007 he was appointed to succeed Jörn Eckert at Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel . There he held the chair for civil law, European and German legal history and historical comparative law. On April 1, 2015, Schäfer accepted an appointment at the University of Freiburg to the Institute for Legal History and Historical Comparative Law.

Schäfer was a board member of the Otto Bagge Memorial Foundation.
