Jörn Eckert

Jörn Eckert (born May 15, 1954 in Rendsburg ; † March 21, 2006 in Kiel ) was a German lawyer , legal historian and university professor . From 2004 to 2006 Eckert was rector of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel .

Life

After graduating from high school in Eutin in 1974 , Eckert studied law at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel from 1976 to 1981 . After his first state examination in law in 1981, he did his legal clerkship in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg from 1982 to 1985 . With the work "The 'objective observer' in the jurisprudence of the Federal Court of Justice in civil matters" he became a Dr. jur. PhD . In 1985 the second state examination followed. After an assistant at the chair for German legal history, civil law and commercial law at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (Prof. Dr. Hans Hattenhauer ) from 1985 to 1991 , he qualified as a professor in 1991 with a paper on the expansion, design and repeal of the closed aristocratic estates ( entails ). Jörn Eckert was awarded the qualification to teach the subjects of German legal history, civil law and commercial law through the faculty convention of the legal faculty of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel.

After a professor at the University of Kiel in 1991 he took a reputation as a professor of the University of Potsdam and was 1994/1995 Dean of the Law Faculty. From 1995 to 1996 he also worked as a judge at the Brandenburg Higher Regional Court .

In 1996 Eckert received calls to the chair for civil law and European legal history at the Faculty of Law at the University of Hamburg and to the chair for German and European legal history, civil law and commercial law at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. In 1997 he accepted the call to Kiel. From 2000 to 2002 he was dean of the law faculty there.

In 1997 he became the Schleswig-Holstein state chairman of the German University Association . On Schleswig-Holstein Higher Regional Court , he worked as a judge in the 2nd main office since 1998th In 2005 he became a member of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg .

From June 2004 until his death Eckert was rector of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. He strongly advocated the reform of the university and the preservation of its autonomy.

Eckert's research focus was on the history of legislation and jurisprudence in the GDR as well as legal training during the Nazi era . Eckert was one of the initiators of the biennial legal history conference in the Baltic Sea region.

In March 2006 he died of complications from cancer. He left a wife and three children. His grave is in the south cemetery in Kiel .
