Richard M. Buxbaum

Richard M. Buxbaum (* 1930 in Griesheim ) is a German-American law scholar who teaches at the University of California, Berkeley .

Life and accomplishments

Buxbaum is the son of the Hessian country doctor Heinrich Buxbaum. The Jewish family emigrated to the United States in 1938 and settled in New York State . After graduating from high school in 1946, Buxbaum studied economics and Slavic literature (AB 1950) at Cornell University . He then earned a Bachelor of Laws (1952) from Cornell Law School and a Master of Laws (1953) from Berkeley . He then worked as a defense attorney for eight years and worked u. a. For three years as a military defender at the headquarters of the US armed forces in Heidelberg . Since 1961 he has been a professor at the University of California, Berkeley . In 1964 he was appointed professor there for life (Jackson H. Ralston Professor of International Law, School of Law).

Buxbaum specializes in international business law and, above all, corporate law. He was a director of the Earl Warren Legal Institute (1970–1974) and the National Center on Financial Services, EWLI (1988–1990). From 1990 to 1993 he was Director of the University of California Center for German and European Studies and Chairman of the Center for Western European Studies, University of California at Berkeley (1990–1993). He was also Dean of the Faculty from 1993 to 1999 and headed the LL.M. program at the American University in Armenia, Yerevan (1996-2000).

Buxbaum was Editor-in-Chief, The American Journal of Comparative Law (1987-2003) and Contributing Editor, CEB California Business Law Reporter; La société anonyme suisse - The Swiss public limited company; Economy and competition; The International Lawyer; Business and Politics Fellow.
