Frank McCarthy (DJ)

Frank McCarthy (born August 26, 1971 ) is a British radio DJ , best known to German listeners for his radio show on BFBS Radio Germany, which is broadcast Monday to Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m.

Life

Frank McCarthy was born in Bellshill, Scotland, but grew up mostly in Germany. His family moved to Rheindahlen in 1974 , and his father worked as vice-principal at the British St. Clemens School in the then still independent community of Wickrath . In 1982 they moved to Oerlinghausen . Frank McCarthy Sr. was there. until its closure in 1994 head of the British Forces Service Children's Schools .

Shortly after finishing school, Frank McCarthy volunteered for two months in the BFBS-Studio Bielefeld, then (October 1990) he moved to Herford and worked in the then new broadcasting center of BFBS Germany, initially as an assistant, later as a presenter and producer. He hosted his first own program ( Late Show from 10pm to midnight) in October 1992. Other programs that he was in charge of as a presenter and sometimes also as a producer were Saturday Lunch (January to October 1993) and Weekend Breakfast (January 1994 to April 1996), Weekday Drivetime (April 1996 to April 1999) and Weekday Lunch (April 1999 to April 2001).

During his last years in Germany he was transferred to Pristina twice for several months , where he also worked as a presenter and producer at BFBS Kosovo . He has been with BFBS UK since July 2001, but was repeatedly seconded to foreign assignments until 2006. He worked as a presenter, producer and partly also broadcasting manager for the BFBS stations on the Falkland Islands , Bosnia , Belize , Gibraltar , Iraq and Cyprus . From September 2006 he was responsible for his broadcasts exclusively in England, and since June 2016 in Canada .

Frank McCarthy has been an avid drummer (nickname: "Frank Drummer") since he was seven and has played in several bands. In addition to his radio work, he writes music reviews and works as a DJ in clubs and discos. Sometimes he produces young, as yet unknown bands, whose promotion is particularly important to him.

He now lives in Buckinghamshire, northwest of London, which is also where BFBS's headquarters are located.

The current broadcast

Frank McCarthy's three-hour program, which bears his name, is broadcast Monday through Thursday and only presents the Official UK Top 40 Charts on Monday . On the remaining days, a colorful mix of current hits and titles from the alternative and independent sectors will be broadcast. Special attention is paid to performers who are still unknown to the general public. Frank McCarthy not only moderates the show, but is also its producer.

He is also responsible for the BFBS Live Sessions , where bands or solo artists play acoustic sets in the BFBS studio. The recorded results of these sets are also broadcast on his program, usually just a few days later.
