Frank Murphy (pole vaulter)
Frank Murphy (born September 21, 1889 in East Chicago , Indiana , † June 11, 1980 in Urbana , Illinois ) was an American pole vaulter .
At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 he was fourth with 3.80 m, together with Bertil Uggla and William Halpenny , behind gold medalist Harry Babcock (3.95 m) and silver medalists Frank Nelson and Marc Wright (3.85 m). Deviating from the usual practice, the three fourth-placed received a bronze medal (Halpenny had injured himself when falling into the insufficiently secured pit).
Frank Murphy was a graduate of the University of Illinois .
