Frank Peeters

Frank Peeters (* 1954 in Wilrijk, Belgium ) is Professor and Honorary Dean of the Joint Institute for Translation and Interpreting at the University of Antwerp (UA) and the Artesis Hogeschool Antwerp (today: Artesis Plantijn Hogeschool Antwerp). As a professor, he specializes in the Dutch language and the areas of theater history and historiography.

Live and act

Frank Peeters' professional training began with studying German at the University of Antwerp and ended in 1986 with the work “Het Vlaamse Volkstoneel 1920–1924. Ontwikkeling en toetsing van een tentatieve methode van theaterhistoriografie ”, with which he obtained his doctorate.

In 1994 Frank Peeters was selected by the VNC (Flemish-Dutch Committee for Dutch Language and Culture) as a scholarship holder for the NIAS (Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study), which is dedicated to research in the fields of the humanities and social sciences and scientists in their research projects supported. The one-year research period at NIAS, which he spent in the theater iconography group, turned out to be quite successful for Peeters.

He was co-editor of the works “Een theatergeschiedenis der Nederlanden”, which deals with the extensive history of Flemish and Dutch theater and was published by “Bij Open Doek: Liber Amicorum Prof. dr. C. Tindemans ”. For the former he wrote a total of four articles dealing with the Flemish theater history of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the latter contains contributions to Prof. Tindeman as a theater historian as well as a bibliography of his works.

He also wrote about the Flemish theater maker Jan Oscar de Gruyter and the Flemish actor and director Joris Diels in the work “Nieuwe Encyclopedie van de Vlaamse Bewegungsing”, and developed a draft for the chapter “Theater Iconography: traditions, trends and techniques”, which in the work "Iconography and the Performing Arts: Theory and Practice" should be found.

During his time at NIAS, however, Peeters also took part in several conferences. One of them was the London University College's Presenting de Past conference in December 1994, where he presented his work "The Concept of Nationality in 19th Century Flemish Discourse". Another conference he attended was the Actor, Actress on Stage of the International Federation for Theater Research (IFTR), which took place at the Université du Québec à Montréal in May 1995. There Peeters headed the working group on theater historiography and presented his work "Ideology Embodied: 19th Century Acting on the Flemish Stage".

However, he not only participated in events, but also organized them. He was one of the organizers of the NIAS symposium on theater iconography, which took place in June 1995, at which he presented his work "Iconography of the Theater vs. Iconography for the Theater".

One of his last projects during his time at NIAS was the magazine "Scenarium: Nieuwe Reeks", which he started together with R. Erenstein and R. Van Gaal. It was a magazine that appeared once a year and should contain articles on theater history. The first edition from 1997 dealt with the topic "Nationalism and National Feelings in the Dutch and Flemish Theater".

However, the projects mentioned were only intended to be the beginning of an exciting career as an author and so followed, among other things, various works about the Flemish and Dutch theater as well as various contributions to the theater of the 19th and 20th centuries in Belgium.

However, for Peeters it was not just his work as a researcher and author. In 1997 he accepted the position of director of the joint institute for translation and interpreting of the UA and the Artesis Hogeschool Antwerp. This post belonged to him until 2009, where he continued the work there as a professor of the Dutch language. The next significant step in his professional career is his work as advisor to the Minister of Culture for the Flemish Theater, for which he was hired in 2000. Just a year later, Peeters also accepted the position of lecturer in theater history and historiography at the University of Antwerp.

Memberships

Frank Peeters has long been involved in CIUTI (Conférence Internationale Permanente d'Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interprètes), an association that aims to bring together university institutes specializing in translation and interpreting and to promote a high level of research and teaching in this Area begins. In addition to the many tasks for which he was already responsible there, Peeters is now president and is supported by Peter A. Schmitt as one of the vice-presidents.

Peeters is also a board member of CEL / ELC (Conseil Européen pour les Langues or European Language Council), an association that promotes cooperation between institutions that specialize in languages ​​and their studies.

Research areas

Frank Peeters specializes in historical theater studies and theater historiography. He puts his focus on the Flemish theater of the interwar period (approx. 1918-1934 ) and the 19th century, as the theater never had a greater significance than then. Theatrical performance was not limited to the theater, but was also present in numerous forms in social, media and political areas and, thanks to its peculiarities, has contributed its own part to the consolidation of young Belgium. In the second half of the 19th century it then stood out due to the latest scientific achievements and discoveries in theater production. The following points are therefore of particular importance to Peeters:

• the melodrama and the melodrama of 1800 - 1914
• the performing arts from 1850 to 1950
