Frank Paul Ticheli (born January 21, 1958 in Monroe, Louisiana ) is an American composer and music teacher . Many of his compositions are among the standard works for wind orchestra .

Life

Frank Ticheli first studied at Southern Methodist University, where he earned a bachelor's degree ( Bachelor of Music ). He then moved to the University of Michigan . There he studied composition with William Albright , Leslie Bassett , George Wilson and William Bolcom and received his doctorate in musicology in 1987. Since 1991, Ticheli has been Professor of Classical Performance Practice and Composition at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California . He was also composer-in-residence with the Pacific Symphony orchestra from 1991 to 1998 .

Awards

Ticheli has received several awards for his work. In 1986 he received the Charles Ives Scholarship ($ 7,500) and in 1990 the Goddard Lieberson Fellowship ($ 15,000) from the American Academy of Arts and Letters . In 2006 he won the National Band Association's William D. Revelli Composition Award with his 2nd Symphony . Ticheli was also awarded the Distinguished Service to Music Medal .
