Franklin Menges

Franklin Menges (born October 26, 1858 in Menges Mills , York County , Pennsylvania , †  May 12, 1956 in Arlington , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1925 and 1931 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Franklin Menges attended public schools in York County and then Baugher Academy Preparatory School in Hanover . In 1886 he graduated from Gettysburg College . There he taught chemistry and physics between 1886 and 1896. Between 1897 and 1903 he headed the science faculty at York High School . From 1898 to 1918 he also lectured at agricultural schools in Pennsylvania and other states. He arranged for a soil study for the state of Pennsylvania and published some writings on agricultural subjects. In 1904 he represented his state's Department of Agriculture at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis .

Politically, Menges joined the Republican Party . In the 1924 congressional election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat Samuel Feiser Glatfelter on March 4, 1925 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1931 . These had been shaped by the events of the Great Depression since 1929 .

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Franklin Menges worked in agriculture until he retired in 1947. He then moved to Arlington, Virginia, where he died on May 12, 1956 at the age of 97. He was buried in Gettysburg .
