Franklyn F. Bond

Franklyn F. Bond (born July 1, 1897 in New York City , † August 6, 1946 in Seattle ) was an American ichthyologist .

Life

Bond studied at Cornell University and was captain of the fencing team there . He had five children with his wife Annete G. Bond, whom he married in 1927.

Researches

Bond explored the rainforests of South and Central America and discovered some previously unknown animal and plant species. In particular, he put on collections of several thousand fish, including the first specimens of Corydoras septentrionalis . Another of his discoveries in 1937 were the Endlers guppies . From 1938 to 1940, Bond was the first to systematically catch freshwater fish in the Maracaibo lowlands in Venezuela . The University of Michigan Museum of Zoology is home to a collection of these fish. Additional copies are in the possession of Stanford University . The species discovered in Venezuela included numerous new species, including the Rivulus bondi named after Bond . Also Corydoras bondi , another catfish species, was later named after him.

Ariomma bondi and Malacoctenus bondi , which are named after the British ornithologist James Bond , are not named after him .
