Frans van Donia

Frans van Donia (* 1580 in Jelsum ; † February 25, 1651 in The Hague ) was envoy of the province of Friesland at the Westphalian peace negotiations in Münster and Osnabrück, in which he played no important role.

Life

Frans van Donia was the son of Kempe van Donia (1554-1622) and his wife Frouck van Goslinga (1552-1616), an old Frisian chieftain family. He married Geertruid Engelstede (1584–1643). The marriage remained childless.

Frans van Donia was appointed in 1643 as representative of the knighthood of the province of Friesland and member of the States General for the Westphalian peace negotiations with Spain in Münster. On March 1, 1643, he and Barthold van Gent signed the treaty with France, which excluded a separate peace with Spain. This was seen in connection with the Spanish-Dutch War . In 1646 he stayed with the Dutch embassy in Munster to advance the negotiations. In September 1646 he stayed with Adriaan Pauw in Osnabrück to offer the French to mediate with the Spanish. At the beginning of 1647 he signed the preliminary contract in Münster and in the summer took over the representation of the Netherlands in place of Barthold van Gent. On January 30, 1648, Frans signed the agreement. The solemn ratification of the peace treaty was on May 15, 1648 in Münster.
