František Link

František Link (born August 15, 1906 in Brno , † September 28, 1984 in Paris ) was a Czech astronomer and educator .

Life

Link studied mathematics , geodesy and astronomy at Masaryk University in Brno (MSc) from 1924 to 1929 . He received his doctorate and did a post-doctorate in France from 1931 to 1933 at the Lyon and Pic du Midi observatories .

From 1933 Link was an external employee at the state observatory of Czechoslovakia in Prague and Ondřejov . In parallel, he worked as a physics teacher at various middle schools and published popular science works. In 1947 he founded the Bulletin of the Astronomical Institutes of Czechoslovakia . He was the first president of the Astronomical Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences ( Astronomický ústav AV ČR ) and researched especially the atmosphere , lunar eclipses , climatological cyclicality and areas of general relativity .

Act

Link contributed significantly to the explanation of the gravitational lensing effect ; In 2006 the Czech Astronomical Association organized a conference in his honor at the Charles University in Prague , which was sponsored by the scientists Martin Šolc , Luboš Perek , Václav Bumba and David Heyrovský .

The asteroid (3550) Link was named after him.
