František Pošta

František Pošta (born August 22, 1919 in Lány u Rakovníka , † July 18, 1991 in Prague ) was a Czech double bass player and music teacher .

František Pošta first received violin lessons from Václav Tuček, later switched to the double bass and was taught by František Tuček. From 1934 to 1939 he studied at the Prague Conservatory with Oldřich Šorejs . From 1939 he played as a double bass player in the Czech Philharmonic , as a solo double bass player from 1945 until his retirement in 1985. With the orchestra he made international tours to the USSR , USA , Japan and Australia .

As a soloist Pošta has given concerts around the world both with solo concerts and chamber music.

He has been teaching as a professor at the Prague Conservatory since 1953 and has also given master classes and lectures in Finland, Japan (Tokyo Music Academy), London, Manchester, New York and Vienna. He was also a jury member at international double bass competitions in Markneukirchen and on the Isle of Man, among others .

Pošta was one of the major pioneers in the advancement of technical standards and teaching methods for the instrument and also made numerous transcriptions for the double bass.

He published numerous sound recordings and played on an instrument made by the violin maker Grancino from 1695. The title of one of his popular recordings "The singing Grancino of František Pošta" is indicative of his special, singing tone.
