The Franz-Novy-Hof is a council in the 16th Viennese district Ottakring . The large residential complex was built between 1950 and 1954 according to plans by eight architects and was named after the politician Franz Novy .

location

The Franz-Novy-Hof is located in the Viennese cadastral community Ottakring north of the border with the Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus district . The complex extends over three blocks and is bordered by Koppstrasse in the north, Zagorskigasse in the east and Gablenzgasse in the south, with Pfenninggeldgasse running through the residential complex. The community building is surrounded by several community buildings and residential complexes. Adjacent to the north is the Sulmgasse 2-6 residential complex, the Pirquethof to the east and the Schmelz residential complex and the Willi-Liwanec-Hof to the south . The Rohrauerpark and the sports field of the SPC Helfort Wien are also nearby .

history

Before construction began, there were eight single-storey emergency barracks with a total of 128 apartments and two bars on the site of the residential complex. These buildings were built in 1911 by the Society for Emergency Housing. Originally planned for a period of 17 years, the complex, popularly known as "Negerdörfel", served as living space for homeless families with many children. Despite the fact that the barracks were originally planned as a temporary measure and the grounds had to be returned to the municipality of Vienna in 1928, the quarters were only demolished in 1952. The Franz-Novy-Hof was built in three construction phases from 1950. After the system was equipped with lifts between 1989 and 1990, the windows and doors were renewed between 2007 and 2010 and a thermal insulation composite system was installed on the facade.

Buildings

The Franz-Novy-Hof consists of a total of 16 components with 48 stairs. Three architectural communities were involved in the construction, with the construction being carried out in four phases. In the first construction phase, which was implemented between 1950 and 1952, four row buildings and four cube-shaped houses were built in 1952. The eight structures were erected on the triangular property between Koppstrasse, Hettenkofergasse, Herbststrasse and Pfenninggeldgasse. The row buildings were designed with five storeys and hipped roofs and 18 window axes. They also have rounded balconies oriented to the east with lattice balustrades and staircase towers raised by one and a half storeys on the west facade. The four-story single houses also have rows of balconies, cornices, hipped roofs and staircase towers, as well as an attic with attic windows. Only a single house in the middle of this construction phase was equipped with six floors. It also stands out from the rest of the building due to the plastered facade, which is alternately accentuated with a double row of loggias and two rows of balconies.

In the second construction phase, which took place from 1952 to 1953, four five-story row buildings were erected on Gablenzstrasse. They have 12 window axes and only differ from the buildings in the first phase in their elaborate window frames, rustic balcony consoles and external lifts that were added later. During the third construction phase between 1953 and 1954, an inner courtyard was enclosed on the remaining street block to Herbststrasse by two multi-angled structures. They have five floors, an attic floor with attic windows, a roof cornice and elevated staircase towers. Most recently, in 1955, a nine-window-long linear building and a double L-shaped block as a five-storey structure with a loft between Herbststrasse, Pfenninggeldgasse and Zagorskigasse were erected. The L-shaped block was closed off by a seven-story high-rise.

Works of art

In the Franz-Novy-Hof there are a total of five works of art, all of which are listed. On the facade at Pfenninggeldgasse 4, 4a is the monumental ceramic mosaic mural “100,000 new Viennese community apartments” by Otto Rudolf Schatz . It was created in 1957 to commemorate the laying of the foundation stone for the 100,000 community housing. It shows numerous architects and three female architects with models of the community buildings they have planned. The inscription reads: "Where there is a circle of creators / Grows a hundred thousandfold seeds: / Because people, space and time unite / For the good, only action."

In the courtyard behind Herbststrasse 103 is the Franz Novy monument, which was created in 1959 by Edmund Moiret . With a portrait relief on a four meter high ceramic pillar, it commemorates the trade unionist and councilor Franz Novy (1900–1949). The ceramic pillar bears the inscription: "He began / in the hardest / time / with the reconstruction / rebuilding / Vienna". There are also bas-reliefs on both sides showing construction workers (bricklayers, blacksmiths and master painters) with the inscription “He educated the construction workers” and artists (painters, architects and sculptors) with the inscription “He promoted art”. On the back there is a quote from Schiller's “Glocke”: “May / the hearts / and hands / in the spirit / the / friendship / united / the / best / only / serve”.

The sculpture "Electrical Energy" made of natural stone was created in 1953 by Ferdinand Opitz . It is located in the front garden at the corner of Gablenzgasse 118 / Pfenninggeldgasse 2. The freestanding sculpture "Maurer" made of natural stone in front of the building at Pfenninggeldgasse 4, 4a in the middle of trees was designed in 1955 by Otto Eder. Artur Hecke created the natural stone sculpture "Freundinnen" in 1959. It stands under trees in front of the house at Pfenninggeldgasse 1.
