Franz Adolph Wilhelm von Ostfriesland-Rietberg (born November 13, 1651 in Rietberg ; † March 15, 1690 in Strasbourg ) from the house of Cirksena , was canon in Cologne , Paderborn and Strasbourg and from 1677 to 1680 Count von Rietberg .

Life

He came from the Rietberg branch of the House of Cirksena . He was the son of Johann IV and his wife Anna Katharina Countess von Salm-Reifferscheid.

He entered the clergy as a later son and studied in Leuven , among other places . From 1673 he was canon in Paderborn and also had a canon position in the Cologne cathedral chapter.

After the death of his brother Friedrich Wilhelm , he took over rule in the county of Rietberg in 1677. In 1678, against the background of excessive alcohol consumption, he made the trade and consumption of brandy a criminal offense. In the course of the Dutch War , the French invaded Westphalia and in 1679 also devastated the city and county of Rietberg.

In order to remain canon, Franz Adolph Wilhelm renounced the rule in 1680 in favor of his younger brother Ferdinand Maximilian . However, he continued the reign until his brother came of age in 1685. After his brother died in 1687, he temporarily took over the reign again for the heiress Maria Ernestine Francisca von Rietberg .

When he wrote his will in 1690, he was dean of the Cologne cathedral chapter, scholaster in the chapter of Strasbourg cathedral and canon in Paderborn. Franz Adolf Wilhelm had a biological daughter who was married to Meyer zur Haardt in Druffel in 1703 .

With his death the house of Ostfriesland died out in the Rietberg line. He was buried in the Strasbourg Cathedral . A grave monument with a bust commemorates him. After his death, the House of Liechtenstein began to assert its claims against Rietberg. On the other hand, a comprehensive memorandum was written for the imperial court.
