List of the Paderborn canons

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of canons of the Paderborn bishop's church extends from the 9th century to 1810. Over the centuries, the composition and role of their committee, cathedral chapters, changed . Since the 13th century and increasingly in the early modern period , they were important secular decision-makers in the imperial principality Hochstift Paderborn and represented the principality during an episcopal vacancy . Accordingly, the canons provided the most important land estate . The actual cathedral capitulars were the only spiritual dignitaries. In this list all known canons with or without spiritual duties are to be enumerated, in order of entry.

middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, the structure was not yet given. However, important dignities such as chiefs or economists were already developing. Since 1223 only aristocratic canons have been accepted, only in exceptional cases secular theologians. Dignitary now held five out of six archdeaconates . The following list is largely based on Lagers' studies on the Paderborn pen needle:

End of worldly rule

Secular rule ended with the Prussian occupation in 1802. The chapter itself was only dissolved in 1810 in the Kingdom of Westphalia . In the course of the papal bull De salute animarum it was rebuilt in 1821 in agreement with the Kingdom of Prussia , the first investments were in 1823. In 1930 the cathedral chapter was renamed the metropolitan chapter because the diocese had become an archbishopric .

From 1823

The following list is a collection of the Paderborn canons after secularization . Non-resident canons who have existed since the 19th century are marked with an (ND), honorary canons with an (ED).
