Ferdinand Freiherr von Plettenberg (* October 24, 1650 - September 5, 1712 ) was provost of the cathedral in the cathedral chapter of Münster from 1700 to 1712 , cathedral dean of Paderborn and canon of Hildesheim .

Ferdinand von Plettenberg grew up as the son of Bernhard von Plettenberg zu Lenhausen (1615–1679) and his wife Odilia von Fürstenberg zu Schnellenberg and Waterlappe (1617–1683) in one of the oldest and most important Westphalian noble families . His siblings were:

Life

He studied at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome between 1667 and 1673 . In 1678 he received a prebend at Münster Cathedral . In 1680 he was emancipated. At that time he was ordained as a subdeacon . In 1684 he became cathedral dean in Paderborn . In this context, he was probably ordained a priest. Since 1695 he also had a canon position in Hildesheim . There he became cathedral sexton in 1698. He also had a preamble in Mainz.

In 1693 he was appointed to the secret council in the bishopric of Münster . In 1700 von Plettenberg was elected Provost of the Cathedral. After the death of his brother, he initially ran for the office of bishop himself. But in the end he supported Franz Arnold von Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht . He undertook a number of diplomatic missions to Trier , Vienna , Regensburg and Versailles, among others .

He is buried in the cathedral in Münster. His large epitaph was created by the sculptor Johann Wilhelm Gröninger based on a design by Gottfried Laurenz Pictorius .
