Wilhelm Liese (born April 27, 1876 in Würdinghausen , † March 19, 1956 in Paderborn ) was a German Catholic priest , writer, editor and archivist .

origin

Wilhelm Liese comes from a long-established family from Würdinghausen in the Kirchhundem community . The family can be found there since the first half of the 16th century . His paternal grandmother was a sister of the important court attorney Johann Friedrich Joseph Sommer from Kirchhundem. Wilhelm Liese was the second of seven children.

Career

Wilhelm Liese first attended elementary school in Kirchhundem. At the age of eight he moved to live with relatives on his mother's side in Letmathe (now the city of Iserlohn ), where he received a better education. He then attended the rectorate school in Rüthen and later the grammar school in Paderborn. After passing the Abitur , he studied philosophy and theology in Paderborn, Bonn , Münster and Innsbruck . On August 14, 1899, he received the sacrament of ordination in Paderborn Cathedral ; his first Mass he celebrated on 18 August 1899 in Kirchhundem. Because of a hearing impairment, he had to give up the subsequent pastoral work in Bochum. He went to Freiburg im Breisgau to continue his theological studies. In February 1902 he became a doctor of theology doctorate .

Act

After 1900 Wilhelm Liese became one of the closest confidants and collaborators of the President of the Caritas Association, Prelate Lorenz Werthmann . From 1903 to 1928 he was editor for the magazines Caritas and Caritas votes. In 1906 he became the founder of the magazine "Die Heilsarmee", which he was responsible for until 1931. In 1903 Wilhelm Liese was called back to Paderborn. At the university there he gave lectures on Caritas; In 1905 he again moved to Freiburg and stayed there until 1929, when he finally returned to Paderborn. In the 1920s he lived in Freiburg at Oberrieder Straße 17. In 1924 he was appointed papal secret chamberlain for his services . In 1910 he was given a teaching position for social sciences . In 1914 he received the title of professor . From 1910 to 1914 he headed the Workers' Welfare Association based in Mönchengladbach . At the same time he took over the editorial management of the magazine "Frauenwirtschaft". Wilhelm Liese was a co-founder of the business school for women in Borchen . His two-volume history of Caritas from 1922 is still considered the “standard work in the history of Caritas”.
