Life

Origin and family

Franz Arnold von der Asseburg came from the Lower Saxon noble family von der Asseburg . He was the son of Ernst Konstantin von der Asseburg, Drost zu Wünnenberg and Privy Councilor, and his wife Lucia Odilia von Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht . His brother Wilhelm Anton was prince-bishop in Paderborn, Hermann Werner electoral Cologne chief steward. Franz Arnold's nephew Friedrich Wilhelm von Westphalen was Prince-Bishop in Hildesheim and Paderborn.

Career and work

Franz Arnold received a cathedral preacher in Hildesheim by papal commission in 1732 and then studied in Paderborn and in 1736 and 1737 in Rome. After completing the biennium , which was a prerequisite for the spiritual profession, a cavalier tour to Belgium, France and Northern Italy followed. In 1746 he received a prebend in Paderborn through the resignation of Canon Mauritz Karl von der Horst zu Cappeln . Here the revolt followed on July 31, 1746 . Thanks to the good relations of his brother Hermann Werner, he came into the possession of the Archdiakonat Hildesheim in 1752 , became Hildesheim Cathedral Cantor and Treasurer and in 1754 Privy Councilor . 1759 renounced in Muenster Friedrich Karl von Furstenberg on his stipend and transferred them Franz Arnold. As early as 1765 he renounced in favor of Canon Mauritz Friedrich von Brabeck . In 1763 Franz Arnold received the Paderborn Cathedral Scholasterei from his brother Wilhelm Anton. In 1772 he entered the Hildesheim Capuchin order as a novice and tried several times in vain, most recently in October 1775 with the Franciscans in Borken, to gain a foothold in an order. In 1777 he was appointed cathedral scholaster in Hildesheim and from 1778 to 1790 was cathedral senior of the Hildesheim cathedral chapter . On June 15, 1786 he was elected Provost of the Cathedral in Paderborn after his predecessor Wilhelm Joseph von Weichs had died. Franz Arnold did not have a distinctly strong personality and was likely to have taken office through the influence of his family.
