Ferdinand Maximilian von Ostfriesland-Rietberg (* May 8, 1653 , † June 10, 1687 ) was the last Count of Rietberg from the House of Cirksena .

Life

He came from the Rietberg branch of the House of Cirksena . He was the son of Johann IV and his wife Anna Katharina Countess von Salm-Reifferscheid. As a later-born son, he was earmarked for the clergy at an early age and had the prospect of a canon position in Cologne at the age of four . He studied in Paderborn from 1662 to 1667. He became canon in Strasbourg and a short time later in Münster . Between 1671 and 1672 he studied law in Paris . A year later he was ordained a deacon .

His brother Friedrich Wilhelm died as an officer outside Strasbourg in 1677. The rule in Rietberg took over his brother Franz Adolph Wilhelm. He was also canon and renounced the rule in favor of Ferdinand Maximilian so that he could continue to remain a clergyman. Until 1685 he still ruled as a guardian. In 1685 Ferdinand Maximilian actually came to power and in the same year married Countess Franziska von Manderscheid-Blankenheim. He had previously received papal dispensation for the marriage because of his ordinations . The estates gave the couple a voluntary gift of 6000 Reichstalers.

He died after just two years of marriage, leaving behind a pregnant woman. This gave birth to Maria Ernestina Francisca , who later married Maximilian Ulrich von Kaunitz . The Land of Rietberg initially fell back to Franz Adolph Wilhelm. Since this supporter of the French-friendly Cardinal Wilhelm Egon von Fürstenberg-Heiligenberg was, Franz Adolph Wilhelm the Eight also fell into disrepair and fled to Fürstenberg in France. With him ended the series of rulers of the County of Rietberg from the House of East Frisia.

His daughter Maria Ernestina Francisca was only able to inherit her inheritance with considerable difficulty, which fell to the Kaunitz family through their marriage.
