Life

She was the daughter of Count Ferdinand Maximilian von Ostfriesland-Rietberg and his wife Franziska (née Countess von Manderscheid-Blankenheim). She was born two months after her father's death. After the death of her sister in childhood, she became the heiress and de jure Countess von Rietberg. The brother of Count Franz Adolf Wilhelm Graf von Ostfriesland and Rietberg took over the regency. Emperor Leopold I appointed the prince-bishops of Münster and Paderborn Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg and Hermann Werner von Wolff-Metternich to the canal as guardians . They put the county under imperial sequester administration in order to prevent the confiscation of the area as a reverted fiefdom by the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel . The fiefdom was renewed in 1692, initially in favor of the mother. The mother lived with the daughter in Paderborn , Cologne and Düsseldorf . The daughter grew up predominantly at the local court in the Electoral Palatinate . Her mother married Count Arnold Moritz Wilhelm von Bentheim-Steinfurt in 1692.

Reich Vice Chancellor Dominik Andreas I. von Kaunitz campaigned for his son Maximilian Ulrich von Kaunitz to marry Maria Ernestine Francisca . A first marriage appointment may have been made as early as 1694. In 1697 the marriage plan was resumed and in 1699 the marriage was concluded. Numerous children resulted from the marriage. Among them was the later Austrian State Chancellor Wenzel Anton von Kaunitz-Rietberg .

The imperial administration of Rietberg did not end until 1702. The House of Liechtenstein also renewed its claims to the County of Rietberg. In 1714 Maria Ernestine Francisca von Rietberg was confirmed as the rightful heiress by the Reichshofrat . It was not until 1726 that the conflict with Liechtenstein was settled through an inheritance settlement. Hessen-Kassel recognized after the intervention of Emperor Karl VI. 1728 signed this contract.

The family lived mainly on the husband's property in Moravia . The Countess took care of the County of Rietberg from afar. The couple had the Rietberg Franciscan monastery rebuilt in 1716 . The monastery church was also expanded. In 1723 the county was placed under the protection of St. John Nepomuk . The Countess had a statue of the saint erected near the entrance to the castle. A Nepomuk procession has been held since 1726. In 1743 the Nepomucenum grammar school was founded. The new parish of Kaunitz was also founded. In 1747/1748 the countess had the Johanneskapelle built.

Some of the measures in Rietberg were later attributed to her son, who saw the county mainly as a source of money. In her will, the countess decreed that her heart should be buried in Rietberg. She was buried in Brno . Her heart was brought to the Franciscan Church in Rietberg.
