history

Franziskus Gottfried von Meschede from 1681

The knightly family was originally in the service of the Meschede Monastery in a not entirely clear way and initially lived in the town of the same name. A Herbold von Meschede appears in 1191 in a document from Archbishop Philip I von Heinsberg . The Knights of Meschede appear in numerous documents as witnesses to the Archbishops of Cologne , but also to the Counts of Arnsberg . In 1258, a Gottfried von Meschede was an arbitrator in the family dispute between the noble lords of Büren . In 1260 he was designated as one of the mediators of possible conflicts in the alliance of the Archbishop of Cologne, the Abbot of Corvey and the Duke of Braunschweig. The family donated  a number of goods to the monasteries in the region - in 1298 to the Rumbeck monastery .

Initially, they came into possession of a Gut Haus Tinne in Ober- Alme as a pledge . In 1428 they acquired other goods such as the Burgmannshaus, today Alme Castle , from the von Thülen family in Niederalme. Since 1493 a line of the dynasty lived in Niederalme. The branch in Oberalme died in the middle of the 16th century with Goddert from Meschede. These estates passed into other hands through two heir daughters : one had married Hermann von Wolmeringhausen in 1527 , the other was married to one of those von Bodenhausen . In the Niederalme line, too, there were temporary losses of property between 1600 and 1700. Instead, goods were acquired in Oberalme and the lost goods in Niederalme were finally recovered through marriage. The family owned further goods around 1750, including at Anröchte . The coat of arms can still be found in 1761 on a Sedis vacancy coin of the Hildesheim diocese . In 1769 the line in Niederalme also died out. The ownership passed into the hands of von Bocholtz .

After the family had settled in Alme, the von Meschede in the Duchy of Westphalia provided numerous Drosten in Rüthen , Brilon , Anröchte and Geseke . The castle in Niederalme was therefore called the "Drostenhaus".

Gerhard von Meschede was Kurkölner's secret council around 1575. Philipp von Meschede served as a colonel in the war against Elector Gebhard I von Waldburg in 1583 . A Caspar von Meschede was Kurkölner Truchsess and Johann Melchior von Meschede Kurtrier treasurer. Both were present with the electors of Cologne and Trier in 1614 when King Matthias was elected . One of the last representatives of the sex was the real secret Westphalian noble council Diedrich Adam Freiherr von Meschede zu Alme, Almerfeld, Esseln, Anröchte, Brabecke and Brenken. He was also a knighthood deputy in the state parliaments of the Duchy of Westphalia .

As part of the north-west German collegiate nobility , the family provided numerous canons and other church dignitaries. A Siegfried von Meschede was a canon in Soest around 1204 . Bernhard von Meschede was cathedral dean in Münster between 1494 and 1503 , his brother Kracht von Meschede from 1442 to 1454 cathedral canon. Heinrich von Meschede was cathedral dean in Paderborn around 1570 . However, he was only elected by the part of the cathedral chapter that remained Catholic against the will of Bishop Johann IV von Hoya . Johann von Meschede was cathedral dean in Osnabrück from 1626 . In 1648 he was the authorized envoy in the negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia . Wilhelm Ferdinand Werner von Meschede was canon in Osnabrück around 1746.

Various female members of the sex were canoness. Clara von Meschede was abbess of Geseke Abbey between 1564 and 1569 .
