Life

Origin and family

Hugo Franz von Fürstenberg was the son of Ferdinand von Fürstenberg and his wife Maria Theresia von Westphalen zu Laer and thus came from the noble von Fürstenberg family , one of the oldest and most important in Westphalia . Numerous well-known personalities from church and state have emerged from the family line. One of the most important representatives of the family was the Prince-Bishop Ferdinand von Fürstenberg . Hugo Franz had eight brothers and seven sisters, many of whom, however, had early infant deaths. His brother Christian Franz (1689–1755) was a member of the Reichshofrat and Erbdroste , Wilhelm Franz (1684–1707), Ferdinand Anton (1683–1711), Friedrich (1685–1706), Friedrich Christian (1700–1742) and Franz Egon ( 1702–1761) were canons in Münster and Paderborn.

Act

After the death of his brother Ferdinand Wilhelm, Hugo Franz received a papal commitment to a Hildesheim cathedral canon in 1706 . The revolt took place on December 6, 1706. He first studied in Mainz . From 1710 to 1713 he studied at the University of Cologne . He completed his biennium in Orléans since 1715 . He focused on law in his studies. Instead of a spiritual career as planned by his father, Hugo Franz would have preferred to become a soldier. At times he toyed with the idea of entering French services. Ultimately, he came to terms with his spiritual career.

The Turnar awarded him in 1713 a münsterisches Domkanonikat. In 1722 he bought the Münster cathedral coast from the cathedral sexton of Nesselrode for 10,000 Rhenish guilders . He received the necessary money from his brother Christian Franz . Two years later he was appointed to the Secret Council in Hildesheim. His vote for Clemens August von Bayern in the Hildesheim bishopric election in 1724 brought him a “reward” of 4,000 Reichstalers. In 1750 he renounced the Hildesheim prebende in favor of his nephew Christian Ignaz Alexander. On December 8, 1755, he handed over the cathedral coast to his nephew Franz Friedrich Wilhelm von Fürstenberg. This transfer did not take effect because Hugo Franz passed away three days later. He was ordained as a subdiaconate .

Despite numerous prebends and other incomes, his lifestyle was so lavish that he often asked for money from his family. He probably didn't play a really active political role.
