Franz Arnold Melchers

Franz Arnold Melchers (born October 24, 1765 in Werne ; † February 18, 1851 in Münster ) was a Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop in Münster .

Life

Franz Arnold Melchers first attended high schools in Werl and Rheine . In 1788 he began studying theology in Münster . On April 8, 1789, he was ordained a priest in Münster Cathedral. There followed a few years as an assistant chaplain until Melchers was appointed by Franz von Fürstenberg to sub-rain at the episcopal seminary in Münster in 1795 . He held this office until 1823.

Melchers was appointed canon at the cathedral in 1802 and in 1813 Napoleon was appointed cathedral capitular . In 1825 he received his doctorate from the theological faculty in Breslau . In 1826, Melchers was appointed vicar general by Bishop Kaspar Maximilian Droste zu Vischering .

On November 21, 1836, Melchers was appointed auxiliary bishop in Münster and titular bishop of Hebron . He received the episcopal ordination on May 6, 1837 by the Münster bishop Kaspar Max Freiherr Droste zu Vischering. In 1846 Melchers became provost of the cathedral . After the death of Bishop Kaspar Maximilian, Johann Georg Müller's successor also appointed Melcher as his vicar general. Melchers died on February 18, 1851. His successor in the office of Vicar General was his nephew Paulus Melchers , who later became Archbishop of Cologne .

In his hometown of Werne he was made an honorary citizen and a street was named after him.
